Chico and the Man and the Other Man

I do a bit of DVD-watching, and here's something I've noticed: When I read the backs of DVD boxes, I'm almost never able to tell what the movie is like. It almost seems that the words on the boxes are written to deliberately obscure the true nature of the movie contained wherein. For example, a subtle "black comedy" is described as, "A hilarious, madcap romp, that'll have you doubled over with laughter from start to (insert pun based on the movie's title) finish!"

I think what's happening is that the people who are trying to sell the movie want everyone to think that the movie is more "mainstream" than it actually is. The unavoidable result of this is lots of "mainstream" viewers, disappointed by the "weird" movie they were tricked into watching.

Another unfortunate by-product of this situation is the people who would've actually liked the movie, but never had a chance to see it because they don't appreciate, "Hilarious, madcap romps."

you know a while ago brian and i saw this preview for this movie called mystrious skin. this movie seemed like it was going to be amazing by the preview alone. it seemed like a murder mystery type movie ... thinking kinda like maybe a donnie darkoish type movie ...not bad i thought ......
yeah, i thought.
we rented it about a week later.
most of the movie was a dude bone fest and was nothing like the preview. so thoughout this whole gay porno flick incogneto everyone was blaming me for the rental. the sarcasim of "hey great movie pick leo" was everywhere expecially when we all thought it was gonna be a good movie. i said twice give me the remote so we can fast forward these dudes butt fucking and oddly enough no one complied to my request.
ha, go figure.... (shrug)

i remember it as laura and leo saying "that movie looks awesome." ...i dont really remember the trailer...i mean i remember seeing it but couldnt really make a decision on watching or passing because i couldnt tell what the hell it was about (thought maybe harsh small town life). i was more or less indifferent or just mildly interested in seeing it. BUT once the man lovin' came on i must admit i couldnt stop watching. actually i was waiting for some plot and or aliens. and i am not kidding about the aliens.
